AN INTENSE IMMERSION INTO THAI CULTURE AT BAN NAM JUM, SANKAMPAENG
From learning the art of Thai boxing (Muay Thai) to plowing a field behind a buffalo, the village of Ban Nam Jum offers one of the most varied cultural immersion programs in northern Thailand. Upon arriving in this serene agricultural region east of Chiang Mai Province, you will be warmly welcomed by locals with whom you will work side-by-side for the duration of your stay. Depending upon your interest, you can learn how to make a Thai dessert known as Ka Nom Tiun; visit local temples and museums on motorbike; help to teach English at the local Kindergarten; participate in the seeding and planting of rice fields; or even plow the earth behind a buffalo, as rural Thai farmers have been doing for centuries.
Ban Nam Jum is also well known for its unique crafts, including Thai herbal compresses made from home-grown herbs and soaps made from the wax of the stingless bee. By participating in their production, you will supplement income the village receives from the sale of these items. A bonus is learning about the local herbs and plants that are traditionally used in this part of the world to treat a range of skin and health problems.
One afternoon, the head of the Lanna Drum association will teach traditional drumming techniques in his house. Evenings are for watching Muay Thai boxing matches and trying your hand (and feet) at this traditional Thai martial art under the tutelage of an expert trainer. All activities and lectures included in this program have been developed and created by the villagers, who will directly benefit from the income generated by this opportunity to experience authentic rural Thai life and culture.
